A True Oasis!

“El Sol La Vida, a charming adults-only bed-and-breakfast off a dusty dirt road in Nuevo Mazatlan, is a true oasis in the parched, sun-drenched Sinoloan scrubland – and a welcome alternative to the Golden Zone of tourists and high-rise hotels a few miles away.

The peaceful, breezy pool area, with its palms and cacti, affords an incomparable unobstructed view of the Pacific. Three well-built palapas provide shade, and a hot tub occupies a front corner atop the sea wall.

Waves crash close to shore, and a few fishermen dot the secluded mileslong Playa Cerritos below. Gulls, hawks and pelicans soar overhead, while a friendly dog and two young cats laze around the immaculate grounds.

Stone, brick, clay and tile are used artistically throughout this former hacienda. Hibiscus and bougainvillea bloom prodigiously, adding bursts of color. A vivid gold concrete wall separates the adjacent Surf’s Up Café, which opens from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Our comfortable and spacious second-floor suite – one of just four units – featured a king-sized bed with an elaborately carved headboard, flat-screen TV, A/C, Wi-Fi, ceiling fans, mini-fridge and large balcony, where we could watch the sunrise – and see the towering Riu across Emerald Bay in the distance.

Ray and Linda, our attentive British hosts, served sumptuous al fresco breakfasts, with coffee, OJ, sweet bread, yogurt and tropical fruit. Expertly made and beautifully presented main courses were: scrambled eggs and bacon, huevos rancheros, omelets, and eggs Benedict Mexican-style. Even the toast was exceptional.

Their unwavering hospitality extended to preparing coconuts fresh off the tree as a poolside thirst-quencher and snack, and inviting us to their Friday night fish fry for friends and family.”

The Only Place We Will Stay In Mazatlan!

“Just beautiful! Ray and Linda , the owners don’t just treat you like a guest, they treat you like family! Amazing location, private beach , pool, hot tub and beautiful deck with palm palapas. only 4 rooms that are all beautiful and include a beautiful breakfast every morning. The question is not if we will come back, it is when!”

A Quite And Beautiful Place To Stay

“My husband and I stayed 8 nights at this lovely bed-and-breakfast, family owned and managed. It is located in a remote area right on the beach so it is peaceful and private. The mangement and upkeep was fantastic. The adjoinig café, Surf´s Up, was also run by the daughter who was also the cook – the food was great, reasonably priced, and served with a smile. The room was spacious and decorated in good taste with a large bathroom and a very comfortable king-sized bed.

Breakfast was served in the patio and was ready as soon as we arrived. It was very generous, hearty and freshly made for us. The coffee was very good and plentiful. Our suggestion to enhance breakfast would be to include a little more variety in the type of fruit and juices, for example, and add some pastries or cakes to the selection.

There is no public transportation nearby so we rented a car in order to be able to get around town and take day trips.

Ray and Linda were always ready to attend to our needs and are very pleasant people. They made the difference on how we experienced our vacation.”

Peaceful-Beautiful Beachfront Hide-a-way!

“We stayed here for 2 weeks and love everything about it. The owners, Ray and Linda, are just terrific hosts and know how to treat their guests. It is always kept very clean and that includes the grounds, pool, patio and of course, your room. It felt like a private getaway. The kingsize bed made me want to sleep in every morning. They are very comfortable and nothings better than a good night’s sleep. No children allowed and I particularly appreciated that. That is the first thing that attracted me to this place. The beach is beautiful, clean, and quiet. You can walk forever on nice white sandy beach. We fished from the shore too.

The Surf’s Up Cafe next door is owned by Ray and Linda’s daughter, Leanne. She is a terrific cook who makes the best soups and the best hamburgers you’ve ever tasted. The place is pleasant and inviting. But, you don’t want to miss the breakfast that is served by Ray and Linda every morning for the guests. No need to go out for breakfast. Wonderful food and well presented too. It’s always fresh with fruits, homemade breads, and other full breakfast foods that are prepared with the guests in mind.

Taxi’s are readily available and not expensive either. We used them the first week of our trip and then rented a car for the second week. Renting a car was a fun choice since we wanted to drive around the area and scout out the local Mexican flavor from nearby villages. El Quelite in particular is a place I recommend about 20 miles north of the resort. Beautiful place, friendly people and good food to try. Some have said not to rent a car in Mazatlan, but we say, do it. I’ve seen worse drivers where we live in the US. It’s fairly inexpensive too.

Don’t like the big hotels, the noise, the kids, the lack of attention? Then this is the place to stay. It works well for older people too since everything is ground level with easy access. I needed that because of walking difficulties. We will definitely make this our go-to place when we visit Mazatlan.”
